Curvy Fit Chicks Bucket List

Hey Curvyfitsis! I’m so excited to share this list with you. The curvy fit lifestyle is so cool because we are steadily evolving and challenging ourselves to be our best. One of the ways that we do that is by setting both short term and long term goals. It keeps us motivated to continue on the journey because there is always something to look forward to accomplishing.

Most people are familiar with a bucket list for fun things like travel or crazy activities. We, curvy athletes, also have bucket lists for the fitness goals we desire to achieve before leaving this world. The list below shares an example of some things on the list. It is not all inclusive so you’re invited to share in the comments what you have written on your fitness bucket list.

Here we go….

1. Conquer Obstacle Course Races

This is a biggie and one that every curvy woman athlete needs to put on her list. I’m doing the Brutal Fitness Challenge when it comes to my area. It looks scary, fun and satisfying all at the same time. Can you imagine a team of Curvy Fit Chicks tackling obstacles? I can. We are going to show out! We have trained to handle the arduous course. If you are feeling nervous you should watch this video and hear Jenita L.’s first hand experience doing obstacle courses.

As Curvy Fit Chicks, we welcome challenges! It tests our strength, endurance, capacity and collaboration skills. You are ready to do an obstacle course race at your fitness level. You can choose to do it as a competitor or a participant. There is something for everyone.

2. Marathon

There are different levels of marathon racing so this can be a goal that changes as your fitness level increases. The distance of races vary. You can start with 5K and progress to half marathons to full marathons. There are even events that happen over a couple of days to over 100 miles. The terrain you choose can vary as well to keep you interested and challenged. You can even travel all over the world doing marathons. Whether you are an experienced curvy runner or an aspiring curvy runner, you can use this as a means to gauge how you are steadily improving and building strength. I also want to give you examples of other curvy and/or plus size women athletes who run marathons. 3. Hiking

Taking a hike is both exhilirating, adventurous, fun and challenging. If you live in Florida like myself, you don’t have a lot of places to really hike. However, as you travel to northern states and into other regions of the world, you can experience beautiful areas to take hikes and become one with the terrain. The benefits of hiking are numerous such as improving balance, total body fitness, and better environmental awareness. For a general understanding of a hiking path’s difficulty, here’s a breakdown. Just like marathons, the variety of locations, challenge and distance of the hiking paths make it suitable at all fitness levels and a fitness activity that can grow with your fitness level.

4. Do a Triathlon

I am excited to introduce all of you to Airin Harris of @unlikelyathlete who is a versatile plus size athlete that shares her love for fitness on IG. From her handle, you know that she defies the box that some people use to describe athletes. I had a chance to ask her about her experience doing triathlons and this is what she had to say….

I believe that if you don't enjoy fitness, you just haven't found the right sport.  I am passionate about getting outside and experiencing all I can, so I have tried just about every sport that has caught my eye.  I have always loved cycling and swimming, so when I started training as a runner, triathlon seemed like the natural next step.  I had literally spent YEARS thinking about it, and just never took the plunge.  As I started participating in more running and cycling events, I started to meet a great group of people in the active community, many of whom were triathletes.  With their encouragement, I signed up for the Wild Rose (all women's) Sprint Tri.  It has become a yearly tradition now and is a great way to switch up my training and spend the day with a couple hundred of my closest friends (ha!)  

Some things I wish I had known earlier:

Not all triathlons are Ironman distance. There are a TON of tris that are shorter distances and are a great way to get into the sport.  The sky is the limit to how far you want to go.  

Many triathlons offer a relay option.  So if you can find two other friends as crazy as you are, you can do it as a group.  I was the bike leg of a team and it was one of the most fun experiences I've had. 

Nothing bad will happen if you have to walk.  Sometimes I even plan to on purpose.

Triathletes are the nicest athletes out there.  During my last event, probably 75% of the people said "good job" or "i'm proud of you" as they passed me.

The person who finishes last gets just as much of a celebration as the person who finishes first.  Everyone there knows that we're all out there doing the hard thing, and they respect that.

You can do it!  One foot in front of the other.

 

5. White water rafting

Yes sis yes!! This is definitely one to put on your curvy fitness bucket list. You can never go wrong with watersports. OMG the fun this brings to mind! If you are new to this activity, no worries. I got you :)! Check out the webiste, U.S. National Whitewater Center, for lots of information and resources on white water rafting as well as other water activities throughout the USA.

7. Horseback riding

Okkk….soo…I have always wanted to go horseback riding, but have not gotten over my fear of the horses. However, this one is definitely on my personal curvy fitness bucket list!! Why? I think it is very liberating to trust your safety to an animal and to be in alignment with its strides. Don’t get it twisted, it can be as rigorous as you’d like. Being fit and horseback riding will surely build your confidence to saddle.

8. Earn a Black Belt

Okay… I hope I didn’t lose you on this one! There’s no reason why a curvy woman athlete wouldn’t become trained in martial arts and work to earn a black belt. Martial arts provides women with the ability to focus, self awareness, environmental awareness, self defense, and learning how your strength can be used to your benefit. In my search to find examples of women who with black belts, it was difficult to encounter. That’s not to say that there aren’t in women in martial arts killing it and earning black belts, it just means that more representation may be needed in this area.

 

9. Rollerblading/Rollerskating

Who doesn’t want to skate again?! Skating brings back so many memories of good times and lousy pizza at the rink. If you have put your skates up on the shelf, dust them off and get back out there. You can do it! Great thing about being a curvy athlete is that you are READY for whateva! So go for it..need curvyinspo..look at @curvesonsquads. We had a chance to share a live interview. 10. Surfing

Surf’s out curvy women!! You too can get out there and conquer the waves of the ocean. To sign up for surfing lessons just search, here in Florida, there are a multitude of companies that will cater to your needs and preferences. Never be afraid to push the envelope for yourself. Your curvy body can do amazing things!

There’s plenty on this list for you to do. I am excited to conquer my fears and check some of these off of my curvy fitness bucket list! What about you?
